About Stephen
Patient Placement Coordinator, St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System
B.A., History (‘15)
Savannah, GA
Stephen Grotto was born in Savannah, GA on May 30, 1992. From the moment of his first breath, his journey—filled with adversity—began. Overcoming family struggles, he graduated with honors from Benedictine Military School and attended Armstrong State as a financial aid student, graduating Magna Cum Laude while actively participating in various groups and organizations.
His original dream was to serve in the military—he wanted to be Maverick from Top Gun. Instead, he found his path in safety and security, starting as a “mall cop” at Savannah Mall before transitioning into healthcare security. He was later recruited into patient placement, bed control, and clinical operations at St. Joseph’s/Candler, where he helps manage placement of surgical and ER patients, coordinates transfers with about 20 external facilities, handles stroke and neurological consults, and manages dispatch for the transport helicopter. He is immensely proud of the life-saving work his team accomplishes behind the scenes.
Outside of work, Stephen enjoys building models, video games, reading history and fantasy novels, traveling, and exploring museums and cultural sites. He stays active through the gym, beach trips, hiking, kayaking, and open water swimming. He loves concerts—especially 70s and 80s rock—and trying new foods. Most of all, he values time with family, friends, and loved ones, crediting them for his success.
