From the classroom to the production floor: Georgia Southern graduate keeps Hyundai assembly line moving

“When something goes wrong, I’m the guy who shows up.”

Peter Caughran is a general assembly production specialist working at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America. He oversees production, working with engineers and technical experts to keep the production lines continuously moving.

Caughran graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Georgia Southern University. And while he might not be behind the computer digging through lines of programming, he still credits the program as preparing him to succeed in his job.

“It works with me in an indirect role,” Caughran explained. “My ability to write code and automate certain tasks allows me to get more done right. I can do more data analysis on bigger sets of data.”

“I’m definitely driven by immediate results and future potential,” he explains. “And that’s why I like working in manufacturing. Being able to see the cars roll off the line and know that my efforts helped bring that to life.”

That background in computer science helps him speak the same language as the technical staff, keeping him on the same playing field as much as anyone else.

“We don’t have to waste time figuring out what each other is talking about,” explained Caughran. “We’re able to immediately get started on figuring out what the production line needs to keep running smoothly.”

But that’s not the only thing he has in common with his coworkers. He says the culture at Hyundai is what brings everyone together.

“Everybody is highly capable and highly dedicated to producing cars,” he said. “The goal for everyone at Hyundai is to build great cars. So it’s very easy to solve some of these problems or work through them, because at the end of the day, everyone here wants to put out a product we’re all proud of.”

It’s that common goal that’s led him to dig deeper into what motivates him and how it feels to accomplish his own dreams.

“I’m definitely driven by immediate results and future potential,” he explains. “And that’s why I like working in manufacturing. Being able to see the cars roll off the line and know that my efforts helped bring that to life.”

But the real treat for him comes a little later down the line.

“My favorite thing about working at Hyundai is the sense of pride that comes with it,” Caughran said. “When I see an Ioniq 5 on the road, I get to turn to my family and show them what I helped make. There’s no other feeling like that.”
